IOWA REPUBLICANS GET IT RIGHT
Well, folks, you're seeing what happens when I'm home for a week, and it's raining, and I'm caught up (at least for now) on major writing projects. Lots of blogs. My apologies. ha! But thank you for reading.
Guess what I just received from Iowa Republicans? Their 2026 state convention platform, and under "Commerce" plank 17 is:
We declare that small businesses, including family farms and other cottage industries, have the right to produce and sell foods and other goods to customers through private transactions whether raw goods or value-added products, free from government regulation, interference or penalization at any level or in any capacity, AKA "food emancipation proclamation."
Can we all dance a jig now? Boy howdy, I about turned cartwheels across my desk when they sent this to me. Maybe our voice is being heard.
Last summer, Zach Lahn, the Republican gubernatorial candidate who eventually won the primary and is now the official candidate for the November election, came to our farm to see me and get ammunition for his message about food freedom. He's a farmer and RFK Jr. said if he wins, it'll be one of the biggest political miracles ever.
Here's why. He's a Republican so the Democrats hate him, de facto. He's a small government, non-subsidy, food freedom advocate, so Big Ag doesn't like him, and no state is dominated by Big Ag like Iowa. In general, Big Ag is Republican. So he's in an uphill fight on all sides, but let's just take in a breath today and bask in this kind of aggressive, really aggressive language, being put in an official party platform. I'll give you one guess where that language came from. :)
By the way, my new book is supposed to arrive from the printer this week and we'll start shipping them as soon as they arrive. We're not letting them go to Amazon until Jan. 1. The reason is that we get only about 30 percent of the price through Amazon so we try to do enough retail right out of our own farm gift shop to cover the initial printing cost. The title: FOOD EMANCIPATION: UNSHACKLING AMERICA'S SUSTENANCE. It has numerous suggested wordings for the idea. I'm not dogmatic about any of them. The one above from Iowa is wonderfully aggressive and "in your face, food police." I love it.
Perhaps Americans are starting to get fed up with the nanny state. Is that possible? The revolution can't come fast enough. But with all the idiocy going on, it does my heart good to see such a clear expression of food freedom in a party platform. Get the book and give it to your friends--you can get a box (18) at half price. Ha! No greed here; let's get the idea out there so folks aren't embarrassed to be food freedom advocates.
In the process, we'll open up full time farming opportunities for thousands and thousands of small farmers, break the back of Sen. Bernie Sanders' oligarchy (he's right), and offer authentic food to millions outside Big Food. Let's get this done.
