For all its inconvenience and maddening unknowns, the silver lining to the coronavirus is a collective understanding of some new things.  It has brought into sharper focus new opportunities and perhaps new enthusiasm for healthy change.  Here are some things that seem to be permeating our cultural conscience, perhaps for the first time.

Yesterday, with great disappointment, I announced the Mother Earth News fair at Polyface postponement until next summer due to Covid-19.  That was our educational component for the season.

The most anticipated shindig in our lives for more than a year has succumbed to the realities of Covid-19: The Mother Earth News Fair at Polyface. If you've never been to one of their several fairs around the country in the last decade, you're missing a real treat. It's the biggest gathering of authentic self-reliance and eco-enhancing practitioners in the world.

We don't normally do that in our sophisticated society; we just censor. Take away their voice.

Until last week, I did not know anyone who had Covid-19.  But a close friend finally got it, or thinks he did.  And therein lies the insanity of this whole thing.

Today I returned from my first plane flight since the Covid-19 outbreak.  I flew from Charlottesville to Charlotte to do a farm consult for a young family on a multi-generational farm.  We spent yesterday dreaming and going through financial and resource issues, marketing and distribution, and putting together a plan to leverage their current position into a truly thriving pastured livestock farm.

Whatever your perceptions of Covid-19, on this 50th anniversary of Earth Day it seems fitting to appreciate that it has been the nicest thing to happen to the earth for a very long time.
